The Manitoba Artistic Swimming Competition – Marj Simpson Invitational is named in honour of Marj Simpson – athlete, coach and judge who passed in 2007.
Marj Simpson had a personal athletic synchro career that spanned 10 years which, after her retirement as a competitive athlete, she joined the Executive of Synchro Swim Manitoba (now known as Manitoba Artistic Swimming). Here she served in many capacities including President.
Founding the Winnipeg Aquilina Swim Club, she began coaching the sport she loved. Throughout her lifetime Marj not only supported synchronized swimming, both in the city as well as in rural areas, she became a Level III coach and Level II NCCP Course Conductor.
She had an extensive resume as a judge that included numerous international competitions, Open Championships, World Aquatics, World Juniors and Masters, two Commonwealth Games and the 1992 Olympic Games. As a Level V FINA Judge, she was considered to be one of the most respected international judges in the world.
Marj received many honors during her career that included Synchro Canada’s Certificate of Merit, the Board of Directors’ Award, EK YM/YWCA Honour Roll and the club 125th Anniversary Commemorative Medal. A passionate coach, administrator, clinician and judge, Marj Simpson will be remembered for her vivacious spirit and her love of our sport.
